The PaulWay Spin & Jam Ambient Mix

A friend of mine in Brisbane (Australia) runs a very small 'alternative music' event called Spin & Jam. They listen to funky electro and minimalist beat stuff – the performers are as likely to bring a computer or an old tone generator along and just play with it as mix vinyl. The listeners sit around on cushions and talk about life while enjoying a cup of chai. I'm far too upbeat and mainstream for them, but they invited me along to play anyway around early 2000. Having gotten the feel for it, I did a very simple mixed set of ambient soundscape stuff and they quite enjoyed it – my first actual live mixing, even if I wasn't beatmatching or anything. Quite fun.

Then, in 2001, after a long friendship by email, we met up again and Carol expressed an interest in another mix. I'd been being lazy and hadn't done anything constructive in the mixing scene for ages, despite buying myself a faster computer and larger hard drive. So this was a good chance to get back into it. I mixed all but the last track in about an hour and a half during one sleepless night in November 2001, and finally found the last track to mix in a couple of days later. No beatmatching to be found here – that's why it was so quick – but it was a lot of fun.

For those that have listened to my earlier mixes, this is something quite different. It's not even really a 'chillout' mix – it's much less continuous than that. I see it as an hour-long journey drifting on thoughts, just finding what comes to mind and not concentrating on one thing for too long. It's also a bit more diverse in its origins than my previous mixes, including reworkings of classical pieces and other sources not necessarily related to trance or techno. I hope you enjoy it.

These mixes are only available as complete files and I do not trade in the albums that these tracks are compiled from. On the other hand, I welcome feedback of any description about the mix, especially if you have recommendations of tracks I might like. My email address is at the bottom of the page.

I welcome any suggestions, criticisms and recommendations for new music to listen to. I will consider doing specific mixes for people, but this is only a hobby. Hope to hear from you!
